Professional Bio

A Sacramento native, Dr. Maryal Concepcion (she/her), MD FAAFP, is a Filipinx creator, connector, and rural family physician. She is a mom of two young boys and is married to Jeremiah Fillo, MD also a family physician.

She graduated from UC Davis in 2005 with degrees in Anthropology and Evolution & Ecology, then earned her MD at Creighton University, where she discovered her love for rural family medicine. She completed her residency at the unopposed family medicine program at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, a UC Davis extension, and returned to Superior, Nebraska during training to gain proficiency in colonoscopy as part of her rural medicine concentration.

After residency, she moved to Arnold, CA, practicing full-scope care with her husband for nearly six years in a fee-for-service model. Seeking a better way to practice and live, she transitioned to Direct Primary Care. She is now the founder and CEO of Big Trees MD, a DPC clinic in rural Northern California, and a national advocate and speaker for DPC.

She is also the founder and host of *My DPC Story*, an award-winning weekly podcast that educates and inspires by sharing stories from DPC and direct care physicians. The podcast is available at mydpcstory.com and on all major platforms.

In 2021, she opened Big Trees MD, the first DPC in Arnold, CA, beginning as a telemedicine and home-visit micropractice before expanding into a brick-and-mortar space as it grew.

Her social media experience comes from managing the online presence for My DPC Story, found at mydpcstory.com, where she has interviewed hundreds of her DPC colleagues and continues to build a platform to help grow the DPC Movement through education, entertainment, and community engagement.
